Dancing in the light

The beach at Porto Giglio

Off the shore of Tuscany, Italy, there lies a beautiful Island relatively unscathed by tourists called The Isle of Giglio. This is the beach by the only port on the Island. At the sale for the school

Our community includes quite a diverse population, including a religious group called Mennonites. This artwork is a vibrant painting capturing the sale of a mini horse mare and her colt. The central focus is on two children, one riding the mare as her foal cavorts and kicks around the sales ring, while a second older child tries to control the pair by holding the mother's bridle. Yearly the community has a fundraising day to support their schools, everyone donates by selling and buying to raise funds.
Beyond the children a crowd of bidders and onlookers watch from behind a green fence, with concerned gazes. The foreground suggests the viewer is in the crowd behind some men, one wearing a highly detailed straw hat, which adds depth and perspective to the painting. The Commuters

A friend sold their family farm to some shepherds. They take the ewes over to the Island to lamb and graze for the summer. We arrived just as the Commuters were returning from their summer abroad.

The white Siberian iris, so majestic in its numbers. If they would just bloom all at the same time, not lollygag around in various stages from bud to full bloom to withering past its full brilliance. Proving once again that all stages of life are beautiful.

My Sagle Tree

When driving down the road near The Slash on Manitoulin Island there is a tree that is recognized by every member of the Sagle family. The road to our Grandparents.

A visit with Mary.

So this is a little, well, odd. Heather and I used to walk Mary Rutherford's road a lot. And sometimes I would take my camera. A while back I'm just going through various pictures and I come across this photo I had taken. For those who are not from the area let me fill you in a bit on Mary Rutherford. She was a resident of our area back in the mid 1800's. But on this back road, unmaintained (which makes it great to walk), there is a small disheveled cemetery. There are about 7 or 8 tombstones at the bottom of the hill beside the path, but Mary's is up the hill farther, away from the others. And in the woods. There are several tales about her. One, she was to be married, the suitor did not show for the wedding and she was distraught and hung herself. But the other is said that she was a witch, so her head was buried in one spot and the rest of her body in another.
Frankly, I have always thought she was just a normal person, with a normal life, but it is kind of spooky and when finding the gravestones one of us didn't feel comfortable going up into the woods. I can't remember whether it was Heather or me, probably me, lol.
Back to my story- I am looking through pics to paint and I come across this one and it looks like this. But when I got looking at it closer thinking about angles and composition there was something on the road. So I blew it up-at the top of the hill in the distance is a woman. But she disappeared before we could get any closer.

Copper John

When I was young we lived in Brant township (now Brockton) on a hobby farm. I had a quarter horse named Lucky, and Lucky begat Copper John. So named after my grandfather who was first to find he had been born. Copper had boundless energy, a whirlwind. That colt could run from one field to another at incredible speed.
This painting was in Art Ascent Magazine in 2017 receiving a Distinguished Artist Award for the call Orange.
